School funds new STEM Building for students
9/02
Blackburn High School has announced that they are currently in the works for a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics building - hoping to be built and used by 2023. This project has taken months of planning and designing and now their “state of the art” STEM Center is finally coming to life. Construction began in Term 3 of 2021 when the school had decided to knock down their ‘Old Freeman’ building in order for the STEM building to be built there.
Some students and teachers of the Blackburn High School community that were interviewed, have shared their insights and opinions regarding the new STEM center. A year 7 student in Hollows house described the works as “slightly distracting” due to the loud construction noises, however he is “excited to learn” in the STEM center, being ecstatic by the prospect of having his locker moved from the Hollows building to the new area. A year 10 student described the building as “potentially useful” for students interested in Science and Mathematics; however she has outlined her concerns about disruptions to her learning - especially in the language rooms. Ms Kaur, a senior Math and Science teacher at Blackburn High School has described the center as a “good idea” and she is exclusively excited about the new technologies that will be implemented in the new building, although she has reported water disruptions to the Hollows building during the construction works which can be a bit frustrating at times. Mr A, an English teacher at Blackburn High School, emphasized that he is “looking forward” to the new STEM building because he believes that it shows the school’s commitment to the students' learning. He also hopes that this new environment will encourage students of all genders to learn more, making the STEM subject become a gender-neutral topic. Mr A also believes that the teaching will also be more fun since there will be a lot more hands-on activities to engage the BHS students.
On the Blackburn High School website, the school has posted an artist's impression of what the new building will hopefully look like in terms of appearance and presentation (pictures shown above) for the community to have a look at.
Overall, the majority of the Blackburn High School community is looking forward to the new STEM building being completed as it will be a brand new environment, creating many new learning opportunities for the students at the school.
